New page

Alone, I Stand

I sit admist the empty night
And listen to the empty wind.
No moonlight shines that could offend.
No shadows cast by faint starlight.

One by one, they guttered out
And silent downward drifts the snow.
As passed the years they left no doubt
That there are countless years to go.

All passed now, the race of man
Earth still as when first began
Cities sleep and wake no more
Long since gone the works of yore.

Can you count the grains of sand
That gather at the shore?
I’ve a day to count each one
My years are longer than the sun
Endless time which to explore
And in the end, alone, I stand.

This poem was inspired by conversation with the Revered [[David Blanchett]].
Back to [[Thomas Heard]]
